Kirby and the Forgotten Land

Kirby's first 3D action game, set in a world of ruins. The 'Mouthful Mode' system is the core highlight. Overall quality is commendable but feels too Nintendo-like - almost like Super Mario Odyssey in Kirby skin.

Art Appreciation

"Kirby and the Forgotten Land" is Kirby's first 3D action game, bringing the pink puffball into a new dimension. Set in a mysterious new world filled with ruins, Kirby must rescue kidnapped Waddle Dees. The core highlight is the "Mouthful Mode" system - Kirby can inhale large objects like cars, vending machines, and traffic cones to gain corresponding abilities, showcasing creative design. As the series' first 3D entry, the overall quality is commendable, but the Nintendo flavor is strong - it feels like Super Mario Odyssey in Kirby skin. Level design puts effort into visual details, with clever lighting hints helping players discover hidden elements. However, the total level count isn't high, and later stages start reusing boss fights as filler. The 2P experience as Bandana Waddle Dee is lacking - only a spear without Kirby's copy abilities. The game seriously designed a conlang for the new world, with bilingual subtitles in opening and ending songs being quite stunning. But as a kids' game, there's not much to delve into story-wise. Game length is short - speedrun takes less than 10 hours. Overall, "Kirby and the Forgotten Land" is fun to play, but afterward you'll just think "yep, another Kirby game." As the series' 3D debut, it successfully accomplished its mission, but it's hard to leave lasting memories and attachment.

Rating Breakdown

Core Gameplay & Fun

Deductions

Gameplay Depth
-3 pts

It's fun, but the Kirby IP is too golden - after playing you just feel 'yep, another Kirby game,' like 'yep, another Pokemon.' Hard to have deep memories or attachment to this entry. Look at the title 'Forgotten Land' - for what?

Repetitiveness
-2 pts

Even under 10 hours, sometimes you suddenly feel tired - a deeper puzzle repetitiveness hidden in the mechanics. Including the 1.5 playthrough five maps of Isolated Isles, exploration becomes quite repetitive.

Innovation
-2 pts

Some 'Mouthful Mode' objects in the story are nice, even a core highlight. Another highlight is first 3D Kirby, but the Nintendo flavor is too heavy - feels like Odyssey in Kirby skin. Too few permanent copy abilities, lacking the freshness of 2D Kirby era where abilities felt like collectibles. Innovation is like gameplay depth - fun, but just another Kirby.

Control Feel
-1 pts

This game supports 2-player co-op, but P2 character is Bandana Waddle Dee using a spear without Kirby's abilities - the P2 experience feels quite lacking.

Level Design
-2 pts

Many first-impression designs are nice, some are cliché. Overall level count isn't high, soon you get filler story stages like bridge showdowns and boss reunions reusing boss fights.

Highlights

Learning Curve

The challenge is less about level design and more about good pacing - I'm willing to praise this dimension.

Visual Details

Clever level design largely benefits from visual details - seemingly inconspicuous lighting angles deliberately hint at hidden elements. Nintendo's game design is unquestionable.
